Occupational Health Nurse (Job Number: 014902W-01)


Provides nursing treatment of work-related injury and illness. Assists in administration of case management for prolonged or complex illnesses/injuries. Maintains medical records in accordance with established guidelines. Performs medical screenings such as drug and alcohol, vision, blood pressure, audiograms, respirator and pulmonary function tests. Ensures compliance with regulatory and corporate guidelines. Communicates with employees, line management, and health care providers on health and fitness-for-duty issues. Implements wellness and prevention programs. Coordinates activities with Occupational Health, Safety, and Human Resources. Performs work-site visits and maintains current knowledge of local hazards, toxicity of materials and relevant emergency medical care. Assists in preparing patients for off-site transport during medical emergencies.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs new hire occupational health assessment through employee interviews to determine current occupational health status. Creates and maintains employee health records, and tracks employee compliance.

  • Provides consulting and education services regarding occupational health care issues, including follow-up action as appropriate.

  • Monitors employee exposure to hazardous substances administering statutory and non-statutory health surveillance.

  • Provides first-aid to injured employees such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, applying heat and cold to promote healing and advising on safer mechanism of job performance.

  • Treats chronic minor reports of discomfort and related functional limitations to maintain employee performance.

  • Communicates with outside medical providers.

  • Provides education and training to employees in Health, Safety and Wellness topics, including: BBP, Universal precautions, in proper lifting techniques and body mechanics, as well as other OSHA surveillance, health and wellness related topics.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information and records.

  • Reviews diagnostics and laboratory data and reports abnormal results to the physician(s) and other appropriate caregivers. Completes assessment and reassessments according to patient need and as outlined in policy.

  • Seeks to minimize lost time without risking employee care

  • Performs occupational health surveillance evaluations and tests as established on company's guidelines: coordinate tests with internal and external resources, coordinate with departments' managers and supervisors, documents in electronic record management system.

  • Provides support to Health & Wellness Programs; conducts health risk assessments, health evaluations and other services including, but not limited to health promotion, education, and health screenings.

  • Assists third party as needed for appropriately managing medical leaves of absence and Worker's Compensation.

  • Maintains high level of confidentiality and sensitivity to inquiries and access to personal medical records.

  • Refers work related injury/illness cases to Worker's Compensation, as required.

  • Manages and or facilitates with Human Resource and/or Management regarding employee return to work status and/or process.

  • Maintain communication and discuss cases with disability management vendor, as needed.



  • Registered Nurse license is required in the state of New Jersey. Associate or Bachelor in Nursing preferred.

  • One to three years of experience in occupational health preferred. Five years of experience in related field preferred.

  • First-aid, CPR, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Spirometry certifications are required within one year.

  • Working knowledge of regulatory areas (e.g., ADA, OSHA, FMLA, Workers' Comp, STD/LTD) is required.

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Words, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English is required.

  • Must work a standard forty-hour week schedule and be available on-call as needed.

  • Candidate must be available to travel to other locations while being trained for the position.
